Jeff Discusses How To Have An Attitude Of Gratitude in Seattle WA

Hello everyone and welcome to another tip of the week. A very special Tip of the Week in fact, because this tip is coming to you as we are standing on a beach in sunny Mexico. Working as a chiropractor in Seattle, Dr. Zapata insists that once a year during the winter, we go somewhere sunny. She says it’s something to do with retaining sanity or some such thing.

Anyway, this is the first time I’ve been “let off the leash” so to speak and allowed to do a Tip of the Week. So, I’m super excited to discuss something with all of you that is on my mind quite often and has been on my mind constantly since we’ve been here in Mexico, and that is……gratitude!

We live in a culture where negativity, anger and fear are NOT hard commodities to come by. All you need to do is turn on the news, listen to almost any discussion about politics, or heck….just check out your Facebook news feed and that will probably do the trick!  But, that is why having a mindset of gratitude is SO important and that is because, as Tony Robbins would say, it is impossible to feel gratitude and anger or fear at the same time.

Alright, so let’s talk a little bit of big picture before we dive into the nuts and bolts. Did know that the odds of getting struck by lightning are approximately 1:12,000? Or, getting attacked and killed by a shark are right around 1:4,000,000? But how about this, did you know that the odds of you, existing as you, today in this time are approximately 1:400,000,000,000,000 (that’s 400 trillion!). Now, I don’t know about you, but thinking about that always gives me an overwhelming sense of gratitude!

With that in mind, I want to give you three powerful tools that I learn that can help you achieve and maintain an attitude of gratitude:

  1. Think small! Look, it’s easy to think “oh, I don’t make a million dollars” or “I’m not standing on a beach in Mexico, so what do I have to be grateful for”. Well, this is where thinking small can help. What do I mean? Well, what about that person who let you into traffic on your commute today? Or the person who held the door open for you this morning at Starbucks? How about the air that you are breathing, or the wind on your face? These are all things that you can be grateful for on a micro-level!
  2. Focus on what you DO have….not what you do NOT have! So, how about this...when was the last time you were thankful for the ability to flush you toilet at home? Because the fact is that 60% of the world’s population does not have access to flush toilets or proper sanitation.
  3. Write it down! One of the things that I try and do at the end of each day, and I would encourage you to do as well is to keep a short list or journal. You don’t need to spend more than 5 minutes on this (but you certainly can if you want to), but the idea is that you write down all the things that happened to you that day that you can be grateful for. Then, when you’re having “one of those days”, you can always go back and reference that list and it will help you realize that you’ve actually got plenty of things that you can be grateful for!

This wraps us a special Tip of the Week, brought to you from the sandy beaches of Mexico. If you like this, I’d encourage you to subscribe to our YouTube channel or follow us on Facebook so you can get more original content like this!
